The master-planned community of Valencia drew
its name from the oranges that grow in this
Southern California haven about 30 miles north
of Los Angeles. Soon there will be green to rave
about, too, when the Golden State’s first
Tournament Players Club opens in summer-2003.

picturesque par 3s at Valencia. |
The Tournament Players Club at Valencia,
designed by PGA TOUR veteran Mark O’Meara and
PGA TOUR Design Services, Inc., has been years
in the making, but golf enthusiasts will see
that the par-72 layout situated in the Santa
Clarita foothills and winding, in part, through
the protected Oak Preserve, was worth the wait.
TPC courses are as good as gold with their
attention to detail, first-class amenities,
excellent service, and layouts skillfully
crafted by some of the game’s best and most
renowned players. The TPC at Valencia easily
lives up to those lofty standards.
"We will be one of the premier golf clubs in
Southern California," says Marcus Slaton,
director of marketing for the TPC at Valencia.
"Our course offers something for all levels of
golfers and we are very proud of what has been
created here."
Start with a complete practice facility of
65,000 square feet, double-ended, with three
tiers, and complemented by a putting green of
10,000 square feet.
The clubhouse, 27,000 square feet, includes a
boardroom, banquet room, outdoor dining, men’s
and women’s locker rooms and lounges, and a
top-shelf golf shop. A full-time executive chef
will be available to conjure up exquisite
cuisine.

The golf course, which stretches to 7,260 yards
from the championship tees, has been routed
through the upscale Westridge Estates community
-- with single-family homes ranging in price
from $300,000 to $2 million -- while the second
nine offers more majestic views as it cuts a
swath through the serene and pristine Oak
Preserve. Only a few trees were removed to
accommodate the golf course, and those were
replanted at a 2-to-1 ratio. More than 1,200
oaks remain.
"The unique natural topography of the land
within Westridge is a fantastic canvas upon
which we have created a truly exceptional golf
course," O'Meara says. "Challenging greens
meander through the oak-studded landscape,
rising to some of the areas highest points and
allowing for an exquisite combination of
challenging play, panoramic views, and
breathtaking surroundings."
Designer Chris Gray says the last five holes are
particularly noteworthy, with back-to-back par
5s followed by a medium-long par-3 situated in a
valley, a reachable 296-yard par 4 and an
arduous par-4 home hole of 476 yards. "We think
the course is solid all the way around, but it’s
going to be a great finish."
Because of the presence of the oaks and natural
and dramatically flowing terrain, other hazards
were kept to a minimum. The TPC at Valencia has
only two water hazards -- on the par-3 fourth
and par-3 ninth holes -- and just 27 bunkers.
"The combination of the beautiful oak trees,
distant views, and the way in which the golf
course was designed to fit into the existing
topography gives the course a very memorable
feeling," Gray adds.
"The TPC at Valencia will challenge all levels
of players, from rank beginners to seasoned PGA
TOUR professionals as they play through canyons
featuring dramatic elevation changes framed by
century-old oak trees," says Perry Dickey,
general manager/director of golf. "All of this
will ensure an outstanding golf experience in
line with the high standard the TPC Network is
noted."
The TPC at Valencia is open to the public; it is
a daily fee club with membership opportunities.
The TPC at Valencia will host a junior golf
program sponsored by The First Tee. A PGA TOUR
or TOUR-affiliated event could well be in the
offing in the future. |
